An outstanding theorist, historian and teacher, Stanislao Mattei also had a remarkable career as a composer. He first worked at San Francesco church, taking over as chapel master from Father Giambattista Martini, then as a member of the Accademia dei Filarmonici and chapel master at San Petronio church. The catalogue of his compositions includes liturgical and devotional music in particular; in his devotional repertoire the piece that stands out is the Oratorio della Passione, a piece of music that was greatly admired, loved, and sought-after at the time. In Nuova teoria di musica, the music theorist and historian Carlo Gervasoni defines Mattei’s oratorio «his masterpiece»: a «composition that, according to the sentiments of a number of intelligent people, surpasses everything by the best masters that has been considered part of this genre by virtue of its depth, taste and true expression of devotional feelings».
