Hasselmans is a name well-known to us all, but compared to composers like Grandjany, Renie and Salzedo, he is less known for his transcribing work. So it was a real pleasure to receive a modern edition of Hasslemans' arrangements of three well-loved Schumann lieder ... these transcriptions are subtly done and autumnal in style. They require not only melodic projection but also subtle grading of register and exquisite muffling. As solos or in a set, these pieces would make ideal encores, or better yet as a still moment in a full programme.
