The only source for this oratorio, composed around 1723, is a manuscript score, made in Naples in 1731, and there guarded in the Library of the Conservatorio di Musica ìSan Pietro a Majellaî. Maria dolorata was commissioned to Vinci by the Congregation of the Seven Pains of the Virgin Mary, that had the princess Aurora Sanseverino among his illustrious members.
