Born in a small village surrounded by the desert in the Venezuelan inland, Alirio Díaz has begun a unique and extraordinary itinerary. The agricultural life of the origins, the work in the fields, the economic precariousness, the struggle against illness... but in the end, as he himself puts it in these pages: such a great lust for celebrations. A bit like celebrating life, which is hard but that’s the way it is.
This book illustrates Alirio Díaz’s trajectory, this “farmer who used to play the cuatro”, look after the animals and meanwhile was learning the Divine Comedy by heart and who has later become one of the most virtuous guitar players, admired by Celibidache and Rodrigo and who has enriched his interpretations with a “substrate” that he has always remembered with gratefulness. His example proves still today that learned and folk music are – can and must be – the same thing.
With the accuracy of the learned man and the feelings full of admiration as a disciple, the author, often making use of unedited sources and documents, gives account of the life of this man and provides an answer to this question which, like a prospectic fire, accompanies his research: what is the relation between the spontaneous creativity of the folk music and the artistic “genius” which suggests again those assets in the mature language of art.

Musicólogo y guitarrista, Stefano Picciano hace investigaciones en el ámbito de la historia de la guitarra. Es autor del libro Alirio Díaz, entre la música popular y la música culta (Ut Orpheus, 2011), que fue presentado en el XVI Convegno Internazionale di Chitarra de Alesandria (Italia) y en el XXV Convegno Chitarristico de Módena (Italia). Uno de sus diálogos con Alirio Díaz fue también publicado en el libro Spirito Gentil (Rizzoli, 2011). Colaboró en el libro Romolo Ferrari e la chitarra in Italia nella prima metà del Novecento (Mucchi, 2009). Su gran interés por la figura de Miguel Llobet lo llevó a realizar una amplia investigación que al cabo de varios años concluyó con la publicación de la primera biografía completa del maestro catalán.
Colabora con revistas musicales como Amadeus, Il Fronimo, Roseta, Seicorde.
Trabaja en la divulgación de la historia de la música en el ámbito escolar y se dedica a la investigación musicológica especialmente sobre el tema del canto popular en la literatura guitarrística.

Stefano Picciano è un giovane studioso che, forte di una laurea in Lettere e di un Diploma in Chitarra, si presenta al pubblico chitarristico con un libro agile ed efficace, dedicato a una delle figure che più hanno dato alla chitarra nel corso del Ventesimo Secolo ... Il libro di Picciano è un caldo ed affettuoso omaggio al Díaz ormai anziano che l’autore ha conosciuto in veste di Maestro nei corsi estivi di Brisighella: un omaggio che ha le sue fondamenta in una conoscenza approfondita e in una ricognizione ampia ed articolata della musica popolare del Venezuela ... Il testo del libro (in tutto un centinaio di pagine) è suddiviso in due grandi capitoli biografici dedicati alla giovinezza del musicista ... e al lungo periodo di attività ‘al top’ ... corredando il testo con una sezione dedicata all’enorme - e purtroppo non adeguatamente conosciuta - discografia di Alirio Díaz ...
