Maria Rita Brondi was almost 18 years old when, in April 1907, she transcribed this wonderful and famous piece of the Norwegian composer Johan Severin Svendsen (1840-1911). She had just come back from Barcelona, where she had studied Spanish music with Francisco Tàrrega. Her recital¹ for guitar performed in mid-February in Barcelona was a great success.
Svendsen’s Romanza for violin and orchestra Op. 26 (1881) is certainly one of the Norwegian compositor’s most famous pieces, a very popular hit in northern Europe countries, that was transcribed several times. It’s likely that Maria Rita listened to this piece in Germany before arriving in Paris, immediately sensing how perfectly the cantabile violin and her guitar could match together.

Classical Guitar Magazine (November 2011)
Johan Severin Svendsen was a Norwegian composer born in the 19th century who composed symphonies, concertos, chamber music, songs and a ballet amongst other works. Possibly his most famous work is his opus 26 originally for violin and orchestra, here transcribed in 1907 by Maria Rita Brondi who had just returned from her studies with Francisco Tarrega ... An absolute stunner for any higher-intermediate standard duo to have in their repertoire. This album is volume 2 of a publishing project by Orpheus Edizioni titled 'Maria Rita Brondi's Library' (edited by Maurizio Mazzoli) which is presenting music from her collection of handwritten scores and printed sheets. ... The violin part remains in its original form with notation and markings unchanged ... useful fingerings are included in the guitar score. The edition contains two separate parts and a full score in large, clear type. (Mary Nemet)
