When still a child Cesare Augusto Grandi was started off on the study of music by his father Walter, composer and conservatory teacher. At 12 he began his training as a pupil of Maestro Marcello Abbado at Bologna Conservatory. At a very young age he graduated in instrumentation for bands and, a few years later, in composition at “B. Marcello” in Venice, as a pupil of Maestro Wolfango Dalla Vecchia. He won prizes “Levi” and “Respighi” and, after a period mainly devoted to composition (it goes back to that time the one act opera Le anime della speranza), he chiefly dedicated himself to teaching and research in the field of musical analysis, creating his own School within Bologna Conservatory where he taught Harmony and Counterpoint for 35 years. In 2004 he resumed his activity as a composer. Among his most recent creations: Antifona, for harp, natural horn and actress (Bologna Teatro Comunale), Res Humana, for soprano, reciting voice and four instruments (Cagli Teatro Comunale) and Cantica for cello (Bologna Conservatory Sala Bossi). In 2014 Bologna “Giovanni Battista Martini” Conservatory granted him the “Battistino” prize in recognition of his work as teacher and composer.
