Marangoni completes his recording of Clementi’s 'Gradus ad Parnassum'

Alessandro Marangoni recently completed his Naxos recording of Muzio Clementi’s 100 Studies known collectively as 'Gradus ad Parnassum'. Volumes 1 and 2 have already been released, and the final two volumes are expected to appear in late 2012. These studies not only make considerable technical and virtuosic demands of the performer but are a culmination of Clementi’s compositional and pianistic career. Comprising Preludes, Fugues, Fugati, Canons, Adagios and Rondos in all keys, they are often grouped into suites of 3, 4, 5 or 6 movements, almost as if they were a sonata. A truly monumental work, which inspired composers from Chopin and Liszt right up to Ligeti, 'Gradus ad Parnassum' attains the highest aesthetic and expressive levels of the classical and romantic piano.

For this recording, made on a Steinway A Piano at the Baroque Hall of SMC Records in Ivrea, Italy, Marangoni used the new critical edition published by Ut Orpheus, Bologna, which is based on a scientific study of Clementi’s manuscripts.
