Early Music, February 2002
... This edition of Kapsperger's first book of lute music from 1611 (he had already published one for chitarrone in 1604) is an interesting attempt by the distinguished harpsichordist and Frescobaldi enthusiast, Kenneth Gilbert, to demonstrate that Kapsperger's music is likely to be of more than passing interest to his fellow keyboard players. The notation is at first sight curious, adopting a method that has been used before for lute-music transcriptions by scholars such as Hélène Charnassé, Andreas Schlegel and Vladimir Ivanoff, but this is the first time I have seen an edition like this intended primarily for performance. ... It seems to me that this notation works extremely well for this music, and would surely not take a harpsichordist long to master. ... (Tim Crawford)
