... Described in the preface as being 'the most exquisitely Viennese of all works written by Mauro Giuliani', these songs combine an Italianate ease of melodic invention with harmonic richness. The powerful use of tonic major/minor contrast on the first page of Abschied, Op 89/1, immediately alerts one to the harmonic world of Beethoven and Schubert. For a soprano/guitar duo they would provide rich source material, and are well worth considering for anyone looking for unusual repertoire that is packed with accessible lyricism. (Sue Anderson)
