Clementi, Gradus ad Parnassum: Marangoni-Naxos CD (vol. 3)
Alessandro Marangoni recently completed his Naxos recording of Muzio Clementi’s 100 Studies known collectively as 'Gradus ad Parnassum'. Volumes 1 and 2 have already been released, vol. 3 is now available and the final volume is expected to appear soon. These studies not only make considerable technical and virtuosic demands of the performer but are a culmination of Clementi’s compositional and pianistic career. Comprising Preludes, Fugues, Fugati, Canons, Adagios and Rondos in all keys, they are often grouped into suites of 3, 4, 5 or 6 movements, almost as if they were a sonata. A truly monumental work, which inspired composers from Chopin and Liszt right up to Ligeti, 'Gradus ad Parnassum' attains the highest aesthetic and expressive levels of the classical and romantic piano.|
For this recording, made on a Steinway A Piano at the Baroque Hall of SMC Records in Ivrea, Italy, Marangoni used the new critical edition published by Ut Orpheus, Bologna, which is based on a scientific study of Clementi’s manuscripts.
